웃어라, 세상이 너와 함께 웃을 것이다.
울어라, 너 혼자만 울게 되리라.
낡고 슬픈 이 땅에선 환희는 빌려야 하지만,
고통은 그 자체만으로도 가득하니까.

 

노래하라, 언덕들이 화답할 것이다.
탄식하라, 허공에 흩어지리라.
메아리는 즐거운 소리에 울려 퍼지지만
근심의 소리는 외면하리라.

 

기뻐하라, 사람들이 너를 찾을 것이다.
슬퍼하라, 그들은 너를 떠나리라.
사람들은 너의 즐거움은 원하지만
너의 고통은 필요로 하지 않는다.

 

즐거워하라, 친구들이 늘어날 것이다.
슬퍼하라, 그들을 모두 잃으리라.
네가 주는 달콤한 술은 아무도 거절하지 않지만
인생의 쓴맛은 너 혼자 마셔야 한다.

 

축제를 열라, 너의 집은 사람들로 넘쳐나리라.
굶주려라, 세상이 너를 외면할 것이다.
성공하여 베풀라, 그것이 너의 삶을 도울 것이다.
하지만 너의 죽음은 아무도 도울 수 없다.

 

즐거움의 방엔 여유가 있어
길고 화려한 행렬을 들일 수 있지만,
고통의 좁은 통로를 지날 때
우리 모두는 한 줄로 지나가야만 한다.

There is room in the halls of pleasure 
For a long and lordly train, 
But one by one we must all file on 
Through the narrow aisles of pain.
